The End of the Superhero Drama?

The writing has been on the wall for some time now, and we finally have official confirmation: Netflix has announced the cancellation of Marvel’s The Punisher after two seasons, and will be cancelling Jessica Jones after its upcoming third season. This announcement comes in the wake of previous cancellations of Marvel shows Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and The Defenders.

Fans were heartbroken by the announcements, as the serialized superhero dramas enjoyed immense popularity, perhaps in part due to the record breaking popularity of the MCU films. Speculation surrounding the reason for the various show cancellations revolve around Disney’s upcoming plans for their own on-demand streaming service; Disney+, who already have their own superhero dramas in the works. With upcoming series focusing on such characters as Loki, the Scarlet Witch, and Falcon, Disney is gambling on riding a wave of already existing popularity for the characters based on their movies.

Fans shouldn’t expect to see any action from their beloved Netflix heros anytime soon, however, as part of the contract Netflix initially signed with Disney stipulates that the rights to the characters stay locked up from use by any non-Netflix entity for two years after cancellation. Industry experts no question if the popularity of the superhero drama may die with the current shows, as there may not be enough momentum to fuel interest in any new series while fans mourn the originals.
