Great entertaining drama to add to your library

If you are looking for some great drama books to fill your days, take a look at these curated by the Goeread team.

The Sky Over Lima by Juan Gómez Bárcena

The best heartbreaker novels are the ones that sneak up on you like this one: A tragicomic love story about two amateur young male poets in Lima in the early 20th century who are desperate to get the newest book by their hero, Juan Ramón Jiménez. They pose together as a beautiful woman admirer, write him a fan letter, ask for it, and receive back … a signed copy and a letter. The resulting correspondence grows quite severe, and soon their literary hero is in love and insists on meeting their fictional character. So the young poets realize their most incredible literary creation must die, and no one can ever know it was them.

SuperMutant Magic Academy by Jillian Tamaki

You’re at the beach with a summer hangover, a little outside language, but you long for the pleasures of the narrative. These stories are for that, from a place that is best thought of as a cross between Professor Xavier’s X-Men school in Westchester and Brakebills from The Magicians. Most are a page to three pages long and hilarious. You do sort of have to be a next-level nerd to understand all of them but in the right way.

This Must Be the Place by Maggie O’Farrell

O’Farrell is an enormous talent, and her latest novel is her best one yet. Daniel, a New Yorker, lives in rural Ireland with his wife, Claudette, a former film star who staged her disappearance and greeted uninvited guests with a shotgun. The appearance of a woman from Daniel’s past throws their carefully constructed life into turmoil, exposing all sorts of secrets. O’Farrell’s prose sparkles. This book is a total delight.

Soon to Be Released Dramas and the Books They’re Based on

Books often make for the best movies, and when it comes to upcoming dramas, these two novels are no exception. When looking for your next read, or when planning your next trip to the cinema, these two titles are well worth considering.

All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. When two teens both decide to jump off the school bell tower at the same time, they find themselves drawn and even start helping each other out. But as Theodore Finch and Violet Markey soon discover, the journey to healing isn’t an easy go. Starring Elle Fanning, Justice Smith, and Alexandra Shipp, All the Bright Places promises to be nothing short of a tear jerker.

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. Part coming of age tale, part mystery, The Goldfinch offers drama by the droves as it tells the tale of Theo Decker, a teen boy sent to live with his wealthy family after his mother dies in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Theo can’t let go of a painting that reminds him of his mother, and haunted by her loss, he finds himself drawn to the criminal underworld of New York by that very painting. Starring Nicole Kidman, Ansel Elgort, and Sarah Paulson, The Goldfinch is a haunting tale that’s not to be missed.

The End of the Superhero Drama?

The writing has been on the wall for some time now, and we finally have official confirmation: Netflix has announced the cancellation of Marvel’s The Punisher after two seasons, and will be cancelling Jessica Jones after its upcoming third season. This announcement comes in the wake of previous cancellations of Marvel shows Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and The Defenders.

Fans were heartbroken by the announcements, as the serialized superhero dramas enjoyed immense popularity, perhaps in part due to the record breaking popularity of the MCU films. Speculation surrounding the reason for the various show cancellations revolve around Disney’s upcoming plans for their own on-demand streaming service; Disney+, who already have their own superhero dramas in the works. With upcoming series focusing on such characters as Loki, the Scarlet Witch, and Falcon, Disney is gambling on riding a wave of already existing popularity for the characters based on their movies.

Fans shouldn’t expect to see any action from their beloved Netflix heros anytime soon, however, as part of the contract Netflix initially signed with Disney stipulates that the rights to the characters stay locked up from use by any non-Netflix entity for two years after cancellation. Industry experts no question if the popularity of the superhero drama may die with the current shows, as there may not be enough momentum to fuel interest in any new series while fans mourn the originals.

The Drama Shows That are Well Worth Rewatching

With so many new shows being released on a new basis, there’s no shortage of new content to watch on your downtime. That said, there’s a lot to be said for the classics! Here are four TV dramas that are well worth revisiting and rewatching in their entirety.

The Sopranos. An obvious first choice, and a continual favorite for many of us, The Sopranos solidified the potential to tell a story through an anti-hero, and captivated our attention for six gripping seasons.

Battlestar Galactica. One of the few shows to prove that a reboot can be better than the original, Battlestar Galactica continues to enjoy a cult following to this very day. Rumors continue to swirl regarding a Battlestar Galactica movie, proving that even fifteen years later the show remains nothing short of epic.

Breaking Bad. The success of Better Call Saul has made fans nostalgic for what is often considered one of the best dramas of all time, and with a Breaking Bad movie in the works, it’s a good time to revisit the show’s five epic seasons.

Twin Peaks. You know a show enjoyed some success when a 25+ year gap didn’t stop the production of a third season. With all the hype surrounding that latest season, fans have definitely been brushing up on the first two and will continue to do so again and again.

The Keys to a Compelling Drama

Be it through visual media like film and television, radio or podcasts, or our beloved books, we all love a gripping read. But just what are the necessary elements involved in making something exciting and engaging? Here are three keys to creating a compelling drama that are accessible to any creative mind.

Hero vs anti-hero. It may be tempting to create a knight in shining armor, full of virtue and grace, who rides in to save the day. But you know what? Been there, done that. Today’s audiences often show a preference for the anti-hero, someone who may lack the virtues of a traditional hero but who can often be relatable, an everyman who is forced into action by circumstance. Think Walter White or Tony Soprano, someone who by no means is good but who we find ourselves rooting for nonetheless.

We love our vices! Alcoholism, drug abuse, sex addiction, audiences can’t seem to get enough of sin and vice, and when worked into a storyline those vices are surefire ways to grab and hold our attention, especially when the heroes engage in some questionable behavior as well.

Nobody is safe. The good guy always wins and the bad guy always loses, right? Well, not always. Once in a while an unexpected win for the bad guys or a tragedy for the good guys has us every bit as riveted, if not more, than the traditional happily ever after. With no guarantees in outcome and the occasional death or defeat or a pivotal character, a little bit of unpredictability goes along way in creating an absolute nail biter.
